DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT
Red-Crowned crane can be found at the Amur River basin in eastern Russia and in southeastern Asia, including China and Japan. They spend their breeding season in the wetlands. In winter they forage in salt and freshwater marshes.
BEHAVIOUR
Migratory bird. Red-crowned cranes nest and feed in marshes with deep water. This habitat preference is rare for cranes; most of other species of cranes prefer shallow water. They will also nest only in areas with standing dead vegetation.
DIET
Their diet consists of insects, aquatic invertebrates, fish, amphibians, rodents, reeds, grasses, heath berries, corn, and other plants.
REPRODUCTION
These are monogamous birds, and they often remain together for many years. Female lays 2 eggs but usually only one chick survives.
GOOD TO KNOW
The constant growth of industrialization and agricultural expansion reduces the habitat where a large number of these cranes reside. This situation makes the species third most endangered crane species in the world.
