DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT
Grasslands and meadows near rivers and streams in Brazil, Uruguay, Northern Argentina.
BEHAVIOUR
They feed alone or in small family groups, walking slowly to check bushes and grasses for prey. They smash lizards, snakes, or other prey against the ground
or a rock. If their prey is too large to swallow whole, they rip it into smaller pieces.
DIET
It feeds mainly on arthropods, insect larvae, lizards, snakes, small vertebrates, seeds and wildfruits.
REPRODUCTION
A pair of birds breeds alone. Parents build a nest in a tree. The nest is a rounde structure of twigs lined with leaves and clay. The female is more involved
in the incubation and feeding than the male. Chicks fledge at one month old, but do not get their adult feathers for another four months.
GOOD TO KNOW
When alarmed, the bird tries to hide by lying down or runs away. The species is capable of running 40 km/hr or more. Only does the seriema take
to the air if a predator won’t give up the chase.
