DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT
Southern Coasts of Australia: land and islands. The goose lives in open spaces – meadows, crops, pastures, edges of marshes.
BEHAVIOUR
Even though it is a goose, it is reluctant to swim. This territorial bird defens its territory very effectively against even larger intruders, including people.
The bird deter the intruder by running towards him with its wings outstretched, making sounds similar to the grunt of a pig.
DIET
Grasses, legumes, seeds.
REPRODUCTION
Monogamous species; birds pair for life. They set up a nest in tall grass or under a bush, always in a place with a good view of the area. Only the female incubates eggs. Both parents look after chicks.
GOOD TO KNOW
This species is capable of drinking salt water. This is adaptation to salt in ocean waters.
