DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT

It comes from the Shetland Islands. To this day, it lives in a semi-wild state on the exposed hills and moors of the archipelago. Currently, it is distributed almost all over the world.

BEHAVIOUR

Ponies, like other equines, can sleep standing up. Their ears rotate separately so that precise sound localization is possible. By nature, the Shetland pony is resistant to unfavorable weather conditions. Its winter fur, abundant mane and tail perfectly protect against cold and wind in the harsh conditions of the islands.

DIET

Grasses, hay, grains. In the natural environment, during the winter, it digs out grass and moss from under the snow.

REPRODUCTION

Gestation: 11 months. The body mass of a born young is 13% of the body weight of an adult (180-200 kg). Life expectancy: approx. 30 years.

GOOD TO KNOW

Despite its miniature height, it is considered one of the strongest horses in the world. It was used as a pack and draft animal. Currently, participates in therapeutic programs for children.
