DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT
Asia – north and central India, and southwestern Nepal. Lives in swampland, grassy floodplains and a variety of forest types, mainly near water bodies.
BEHAVIOUR
It lives in herds averaging between 10 and 20 members of the same gender and similar age. It is most active in the morning and evening. Lifespan: up to 20 years in the wild.
DIET
It feeds on grasses and occasionally on aquatic plants.
REPRODUCTION
The breeding season begins in October and continues through February. Females reach maturity at 2 years old, gestation period last 240-250 days, they give birth to a single young, rarely twins. Females take care of the young for the first 6 to 8 months.
GOOD TO KNOW
Its name Barasingha is derived from the Hindu words for ‘twelve ends’, referring to this deer’s many tined antlers, which usually has 12 tines, but can have up to 20 in some individuals..
