DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT

Yellow-crowned amazonas can be found from central Mexico to central South America. The bird inhabits humid lowlands, tropical forests and tall scrubland, pine forests and agricultural areas.

BEHAVIOUR

This is sedentary species and only move locally in accordance to changes in food supply. At night, outside of the breeding season, birds form large flocks at roosts. During the day, however, they are found in foraging groups of approximately 10 individuals.

DIET

They eat seeds, nuts, fruits, berries, blossoms and leaf buds.

REPRODUCTION

Amazonas are monogamous birds. They have simple courtship displays for attracting mates. They lay 2 to 4 eggs, once per season. They incubate eggs for about 25 days. Offspring become independent about 2 months after hatching.

GOOD TO KNOW

Amazons often feed on crop fruits such as avocados, corn, lemon, green bananas.
