DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT
Open habitats such as steppe and semi-desert shrublands and grasslands.in central part of Asia and partly in Eastern Europe.
BEHAVIOUR
The species is migratory, with birds wintering in south-east Africa and southern Asia. Forages mainly by soaring and diving down, also takes some prey while walking about on ground. It can ambushes prey, by waiting at burrow entrance.
DIET
It feeds on small to medium-sized mammals, mainly susliks; when wintering it feeds on mole rats, termites and nestlings of Red-billed Queleas.
REPRODUCTION
Start of breeding highly dependent on availability of prey species. Nest is a large platform of sticks typically 70–100 cm wide built on ground in position that allows good view of surroundings. There are usually 1-3 eggs in a clutch. Incubation takes 45 days. Fledglings leave the nest after 65 days.
GOOD TO KNOW
With little availability of branches, the eagle can also use animal bones to build a nest.
