DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT
Western Africa. Forests in the areas with water reservoirs, swamps.
BEHAVIOUR
Solitary when not mating. Mostly nocturnal, through the day it hides in moisty soil or water, due to unique skin structure that doesn’t protect from dehydration. Feeds mostly at night, among dense vegetation.
DIET
It feeds on young shoots, branches, roots, grasses, herbs and fallen fruits. It uses strong flews and teeth to fragments plants.
REPRODUCTION
It reaches maturity at 3 years old. After 6 months of pregnancy, female births 1 young. It is feeded with milk for 6-8 months. Life span: up to 40 years.
GOOD TO KNOW
Discovered in the XIX century. There is relatively small amount of data about this species due to its nocturnal behaviour and constantly decreasing popullation.
