DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT
Africa, south of the Sahara; Madagascar. Lakes, rivers, freshwater and mangrove swamps, river mouths.
BEHAVIOUR
It moves freely and fast on land. Uses sounds to communicate, only some of them are audible to humans. Adult males patrol and defend their territory.
DIET
It hunts for antelopes, zebras and fish. Food is usually swallowed under water. The young eat insects, fish, amphibians, and crustaceans.
REPRODUCTION
The female lays 75-95 eggs. During incubation (80-90 days), it guards the nest, does not eat food during this time, and after hatching, the young remain under the mother’s care for 6-8 weeks.
GOOD TO KNOW
Threats to the species: overfishing of species that constitute the food base of crocodiles, obtaining body parts for traditional medicine, pollution of waters by industrial activities.
