DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT
South and East Africa. Shrubby and savannah semi-arid areas.
BEHAVIOUR
The activity of this species is influenced by changes in the amount of rainfall and humidity. During strong heat and cold periods, it eagerly digs burrows where it hides to avoid dehydration.
DIET
Grasses, succulents, seeds, leaves, and occasional supplementation of the diet are animal remains.
GOOD TO KNOW
The female lays 6 to 15 eggs during the season, even several times. The incubation period lasts from 8 to 15 months and depends on the temperature in the nest.
WARTO WIEDZIEĆ
Adult body mass : 15-54 kg, armor length: 30-70 cm. The species is important for plant dispersal as the seeds that pass through the turtle’s digestive system are still capable of germination.
