DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT
Azja Południowo-Wschodnia: Indonezja, Malezja. Duże jeziora, bagna słodkowodne, rzeki z powolnym nurtem, tereny leśne w pobliżu jezior.
BEHAVIOUR
It leads a semi-terrestrial lifestyle. He spends most of his time basking in the sun near bodies of water. The biology of this species in its natural environment is still poorly understood. Life expectancy of 25-30 years.
DIET
In zoos, the eagle is omnivorous. They are given invertebrates, small freshwater fish, fruits, vegetables. Diet in the wild has not yet been sufficiently documented.
REPRODUCTION
The female lays eggs of oblong shape, measuring 80 x 40 mm. After hatching, the young turtles are approx. 60 mm long. The length of the carapace in an adult individual reaches 80 cm, body weight up to 50 kg. It is the largest freshwater turtle in Southeast Asia.
GOOD TO KNOW
Threats to the species: harvesting and exporting turtles for culinary purposes, trade for natural medicine, and deforestation for the cultivation of oil palms. Despite legal protection, illicit trade continues in Indonesia since 1999.
