DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT

Prevost’s squirrel lives on the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, Bangka Island, Rhio Archipelago, Sulawesi and the East Indies. Prefers lowland forests, mountain forests and farmland.

BEHAVIOUR

Prevost’s squirrel is agile arboreal mammals, which excel at climbing and jumping. Tail help this animal balance while running and climbing, and can act as a rudder when it jump. Active during the day, but mainly at dusk and dawn.

DIET

Fruit, nuts, seeds, buds, flowers, insects and bird eggs. When eating, squirrel squats holding the food between its front paws.

REPRODUCTION

The mating season lasts all year round and is at its peak between June and August. Gestation lasts approximately 40 days. From 1 to 4 cubs are born.

GOOD TO KNOW

Prevost’s squirrel trills and whistles are a signal of nervousness or excitement. The signal can also be used to locate or alert other squirrels. They also use their tail as a flag to convey social signals.
