DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT
Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile, Argentina and Brazil. It lives in shallow water reservoirs: lakes, ponds, sea bays, swamps rich in aquatic vegetation.
BEHAVIOUR
He lives in pairs, rarely in small groups. A pair of birds occupy a selected territory, which they can successfully defend for many seasons. It is a migratory bird,
but part of the population remains in the breeding grounds all year round.
DIET
Aquatic plants, seeds, small invertebrates living in water.
REPRODUCTION
Builds a nest in a place where it has easy access to water. The female lays up to 9 eggs and incubates them herself. The male defends the territory
and the chicks. After hatching, young nestbirds follow their mother and search for food hidden at the bottom of the water reservoir.
GOOD TO KNOW
Koskoroba, sometimes called a swan, does not have a characteristic swan mask near its beak. This species forms a separate systematic group in the order
of Anseriformes.
