Violet Turaco

Violet Turaco

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT

It can be found in forests, savannas and wetlands in the central part of Africa.

BEHAVIOUR

Turakos are not the most persistent flyers, but they can navigate well and move agile among dense vegetation. These birds prefer to run on branches.
They fly reluctantly, in a wavy flight and only they fly when it is impossible to move on the branches.

DIET

It feeds on fruits, berries, flower buds and insects.

REPRODUCTION

A pair of birds build a rather small nest together, incubate the eggs and take care of the offspring. The female usually lays 2 eggs. The chicks hatch in a fairly advanced state. They grow quickly and within two to three weeks they begin to leave the boundary of the nest to explore the area. In four to five weeks,
they are able to fly.

GOOD TO KNOW

Their feet have an interesting property: the outer toe can point forwards or backwards, depending on whether the bird needs it for climbing or running at the moment.
