DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT
Grey crowned cranes occur in eastern and southern Africa. They are usually found in grasslands close to water reservoirs. They also live in agricultural lands
such as pastures, cropland or fallow fields.
BEHAVIOUR
Non-migratory bird. During dry periods flocks of birds forage and roost together communally in groups of up to 20-200 individuals.
DIET
Cranes are omnivorous. They eat reptiles, insects, terrestrial worms, seeds, nuts and grains.
REPRODUCTION
A pair of birds is territorial and nests solitary. Partners mate for life. Nest is usually located near water. Clutch size can vary from 2 to 4 eggs. Chicks fledge between 56-100 days after hatching. After leaving the nest juveniles form a flock of birds the same age.
GOOD TO KNOW
Grey crowned cranes are one of only two crane species to have long hind toes that allow them to roost in trees.
