DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT
Eastern Africa. Djibuti, Ethiopia, Kenia, Somali. Dry, sandy areas with low rainfall level
BEHAVIOUR
Mole rats live in a well organised colonies, simmilar to social structures that we can observe in bees swarms. Extensive system of tunnels is build jointly. Workers get the food, take care for the neatness of the nest and youngs birthed by the queen. Soldiers defend colony from predators, they can handle even with snakes.
DIET
Underground parts of plants, especially tubers. Diet is rich witch celulose. Mole rats doesn’t drink, water is taken from food.
REPRODUCTION
Only one famale (queen) reproduce. She choose from 1 to 3 males from colony as mates. Pregnancy takes up to 70 days.
GOOD TO KNOW
Sight is highly reduced. Instead, sense of smell, touch and hearing are higly developed. Weight: 28 g – 42 g., but queen can reach up to 70 g. In favorable envioremnt mole rats can live upt to 30 years.
