Giant Asian Pond Turtle

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT

Inhabits standing water bodies and slow-flowing pools in freshwater swamp forests in Wetlands of Southeast Asia: Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam.

BEHAVIOUR

It prefers shallow water, and spends much time soaking in the margins. When out of the water it generally remains hidden amongst vegetation, but on occasions may be spotted basking in the sun on open ground.

DIET

Asian pond turtle is omnivorous. Their diets consist of worms, larvae, insects, snails, aquatic and terrestrial plants. He will not even despise carrion. Similarly to other species of turtles, the giant Asian pond turtle has developed adaptations and different techniques for capturing prey in both types of environments.

REPRODUCTION

Reach sexual maturity at the age of 15. Female lays 2-3 eggs. The young hatch after 70 days. They are able to breed until the age of 55 and live up to 70.

The carapace of this relative large turtle is up to 48 cm long.
