DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT
This species is endemic to the islands of Sulawesi in Indonesia (also called Celebes island).
BEHAVIOUR
They are usually solitary, sometimes can form group up to five individuals. Lowland anoas are most active in the morning and afternoon, they like mud and water baths. Lifespan: up to 20 years in the wild and up to 30 years in human care.
DIET
They feed on aquatic plants, ferns, grasses, fruit, palm and ginger. They drink sea water which is fulfill their mineral needs in areas that do not have salt licks or mineral spring water.
REPRODUCTION
Female usually give birth one young, rarely twins. Juvenile are covered with thick, wooly, yellowish brown fur. Nursing period last usually 6-9 months.
GOOD TO KNOW
Wild population size is estimated to less than 2 500 mature individuals. They are losing their natural habitat. The forests in which they live are cut down and turned into agricultural areas intended for cultivation.
