DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT
The southeastern part of the United States and Mexico. They lives in a humid environment mainly lakes, slow-flowing rivers, shallow reservoirs with a soft, silty bottom and swamps.
BEHAVIOUR
Active during the day. Life expectancy: 20 years. Female are larger than male, can reach 29 cm in length, male up to 22 cm.
DIET
Their are omnivorous. Their diet consists mainly of insect larvae, mollusks, small fish and carrion also aquatic vegetation.
REPRODUCTION
Females reach sexual maturity at 5 years of age, while males at 2-5 years. The mating takes place in March and April, after waking up from hibernation.
The female lays 2 to 24 eggs. The young hatch after 70-100 days.
GOOD TO KNOW
They perfectly tolerates European climatic conditions. Populations in Europe are in places considered to represent a threat to local turtle species and the ecosystem.
