DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT
Found in the tropics of Africa, America, and Asia. It lives in wetlands, swamps, lakes and river backwaters.
BEHAVIOUR
As it forages in the water, it spends most of its time swimming and filtering the surface using its beak. This duck also dives. It makes characteristic whistling sounds, pleasing to the ear.
DIET
These are mainly herbivores, sometimes they hunt for invertebrates living in the water.
REPRODUCTION
Unlike other duck species, it does not mate before the breeding season. A nest is a platform made of vegetation and branches or a hollow. Though these ducks are caring parents, they can toss eggs to nests of other species.
GOOD TO KNOW
Even though these are ducks, they exhibit many behaviors similar to those of swans and geese: they are monogamous and take care of their offspring together.
