DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT
Central – southern part of Asia and Eastern Europe. It lives in high-mountain lakes, swamps and backwaters, meadows, pastures and crops above 4000m above sea level.
BEHAVIOUR
The goose lives at high altitudes. It’s body is adapted to difficult conditions – winds blowing at 300m / s and to low pressure. It spends most of its time feeding.
It is a migratory species.
DIET
Aquatic and terrestrial vegetation, small aquatic invertebrates.
REPRODUCTION
It breeds in pairs or in a small colony of females with one male. The females defend the nests together. Sometimes they lay eggs to adjacent nests to increase the chances of successful reproduction.
GOOD TO KNOW
This species is known for its migrations during which it flies over the Himalayas – above 8,500 meters above sea level, hence it is considered the highest-flying bird on earth.
